Cardinal Flower

Cardinal flower is a striking Missouri native perennial prized for its vivid red blooms, growing 2–3 feet tall (occasionally to 4’) with upright spikes of tubular, two-lipped flowers that appear in late summer above dark green, lance-shaped foliage. Naturally found in moist areas like streamsides and low woods, it thrives in rich, consistently damp soils—even clay—and performs well in rain gardens or lightly shaded beds, though it may need watering during dry spells and can be somewhat short-lived. Highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, it brings bold color to late-season gardens and pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving natives.
