Join us on September 13th in Prairie Village for our final Habitat Garden Tour and Plant Sale of the season! Experience three native gardens and learn how each one differs from the next in plant selection, sunlight availability, and age. These gardeners are passionate about what they do and excited to share what they’ve learned. Don’t forget to stop by our Plant Sale for the opportunity to bring some native plants home with you.
Register Now! After registering, look for a confirmation email in your inbox which will include the garden locations and event details. The information will be sent out again at 7am on the day of the event.
Volunteer at either the plant sale or at one of our tours! Volunteering is a great way to meet people in the gardening community in addition to experiencing the event. If you have further questions about what volunteering may entail, feel free to email us at hello@deeprootskc.org or through our social media.
HIDDEN GEMS
Walking up to this beautiful home in Prairie Village, one cannot be prepared to experience the wonderland of a garden existing beyond the fence. Walk down a path of oyster shells, look behind the garden shed, peak your head through the trees and be ready to find new plants at each turn! The pairing of a stunning Red Oak (Quercus rubra) with a variety of native flowers, sedges, and grasses has made this property an all-inclusive resort for bees, caterpillars, butterflies, and birds alike. Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis), American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), and Texas Green Eyes (Berlandiera texana) are just some of the many native and ornamental species waiting for you at this hybrid garden. Stop by and enjoy each avenue of this surprising and imaginative space.
DELIGHTFUL SHADY SATURDAY MORNING
As the sun gets brighter and warmer, aren’t we all craving a nice bit of shade? While this isn’t typically true for plants, this well-shaded garden contains a wide variety of species that do just fine without the sunshine. From Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) and Heart-Leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), to the sedge-packed makings of a comfortable soft landing, experience the splendor of early fall bloomers and shade tolerators that make up this yard. Be a witness to the care and intention behind each plant and anticipate inheriting the same love for native plants that has made this garden a reality.
A PARTY WITH QUITE THE GUEST LIST
Along with hopes of inviting interesting architecture and color into the yard, this garden was planned with the hopes of inviting native wildlife that rely on the provided habitat. Those species have received their invitation and proudly RSVP-ed, “On our way!” Join the butterflies and skippers at the snack table of natives such as Aromatic Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium), and Showy Goldenrod (Salidago speciosa). Dance with pollinating bees and flies amongst the Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) and Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium). This host is proudly the first client of Deep Roots’ Nature Advisor program and still references their site report when considering new developments. See the impact this one-year-old garden has already had on their community of people and pollinators: You won’t want to be ‘fashionably late’ to this party.
BONUS HIGHLIGHT: ISLANDS IN THE SUN
See the impact a passionate gardener can have on their neighborhood as you walk by the native plant-packed islands in the road. The development of small native habitats where they can be seen and enjoyed by all is a fantastic opportunity to spark curiosity and awareness in your community.
