Plan It Native 2025 Highlight
Nancy Lawson, author of Wildscape and The Humane Gardener
Deep Roots is thrilled to present Nancy Lawson as Plan It Native’s opening keynote speaker on February 11, 2025. Nancy is a nature writer, habitat consultant, national speaker, and founder of The Humane Gardener, LLC. She pioneers creative wildlife-friendly landscaping methods and is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and volunteer master naturalist. Nancy co-chairs Howard County Bee City in Maryland and co-launched a community science project, Monarch Rx, after discovering a little-known butterfly behavior in her own garden.
In Nancy’s first book, The Humane Gardener: Nurturing a Backyard Habitat for Wildlife, she defines a humane gardener as someone who practices compassionate landscaping. They attract wildlife and peacefully resolve conflicts with all the creatures that may inhabit their garden. She joins us in seeing the garden as a meeting place for all creatures, not a territory to be defended. With detailed chapters addressing plant selection for wildlife and how to co-exist with the birds, bees, and others in creating a safe space for habitat. The humane gardener recognizes that humans are a part of nature, not apart from nature.
As a master naturalist, Nancy takes her nature explorations to the next level in her next book, Wildscape: Trilling Chipmunks, Beckoning Blooms, Salty Butterflies, and other Sensory Wonders of Nature. She explores sights not visible to the human eye and sounds beyond our ability to hear but critical to the communication, foraging and survival of our native species. She organizes the book around each of the five senses.
At Plan It Native, Ms. Lawson will share her story, gardening anecdotes, sage advice, love for the natural world, and how to invite it back to our own outdoor spaces.
