There will be something for everyone at Plan It Native, Deep Roots’ annual conference, next February 11-12th at the Kauffman Center Campus.
Our schedule includes some of the most renowned practitioners and cutting-edge researchers in native plant habitats and ecology.
Home gardeners will also find useful and immediately applicable solutions for their own landscapes and challenges, including:
- Perennials for Shade with Shannon Currey from Izel Plants. That’s right — there are many native alternatives to hostas! These native woodland plants thrive in shade while providing soft landings and supporting birds and pollinators.
- Shannon will also offer another solution of interest to home gardeners: Native Ground Covers — resilient, drought-tolerant ground-covering perennials that suppress weeds, prevent erosion and runoff, and support wildlife all at once.
- Most of our landscapes need more woody structure and understory and Alan Branhagen will give recommendations in his session Shrubs and Small Trees in Landscape Design and Ecosystem Function, especially useful for those of us living with the size limitations of the typical urban or suburban lot.
- But what about all those adorable and hungry rabbits and deer, who mow down the very plants meant to support their habitat? Our keynote speaker Nancy Lawson addresses this very real paradox in an intimate session setting: Who’s Nibbling in Your Garden?
- For those concerned with neighborhood reactions or HOA rules, Fred Rozumalski will discuss how to nurture habitat while satisfying Public Perceptions of Native Vegetation and Landscaping
This is just a handful of our 23 sessions and addresses. Sign up now and give yourself something wonderful to look forward to in the new year. Or give your favorite gardener the gift that keeps on giving!
