Fall Native Tree Giveaway 2026

For Johnson County, KS Residents Only

Featuring highly popular understory trees for insects, songbirds and mammals.

Sponsored By

These understory trees provide valuable early-season blooms to support spring pollinators, and their seasonal foliage will serve as larval hosts for hundreds of other invertebrates. Floral spring beauty is followed by fruit production at different times throughout the year, feeding native songbirds, small mammals, and – if you’re diligent – possibly a lucky human resident or two. Species selections are adapted to partial shade environments, beneath a woodland or forest canopy, but several can tolerate more open sun exposure, and a wide range of soils and moisture. Their modest growth rate and medium size (15’-30’, on average) make them ideal specimens for residences with limited space in the mid-story, those who prefer trees that won’t outgrow the home, or who need specimens that won’t crowd overhead utilities. Planted on the corner of the house, in a smaller, secluded backyard, or adjacent to driveways and sidewalks, these selections provide aesthetic appeal as well as major ecosystem support, and are offered by popular demand from Johnson County residents.
